A Little Culture

This past weekend Beth Ann and I had the privilege to go to the Fort Worth Symphony at Bass Hall. Steve and Linda Cervas gave us their tickets, as they could not attend. We were excited to have a date and to have the opportunity to go somewhere we had never been before. Needless to say, we thought we might be a little out of our league but decided we could play along.

We went to dinner before the Symphony. Of course, you might think we should have gone somewhere quiet and romantic to begin our evening of fine culture. Once again, due to the gift certificate, we went elsewhere. We dined at Red Hot & Blue. Nothing like some dry ribs, pulled pork and southern catfish to help set the tone for the evening. To us it was fine dining and we loved every minute of it.

We had wonderful seats for the Symphony. Our tickets were in one of the private boxes. It was truly one of the best seats in the house. We watched the musicians warm up and began to realize the talent that was before us. Just as the show began a group of people came in to join us in the box. Them entering the box made me worry about the proper etiquette that I must display.

The music began and it was beautiful. To watch the musicians move in unison was magical. We were in the presence of greatness. They were playing music from Russian composers (I read the program). The maestro was very animated and evidently had awesome command. The music filled the hall.

At intermission we met the other people in the box. They were very nice but made me realize that I was out of my league in the understanding of the music for the evening. They were debating and discussing things about the music that was foreign to me. They were even taking notes on the symphony and for the life of me I have no idea why.

Beth Ann and I did, in fact, enjoy our evening. We felt we experienced some culture like we never had before. We would love to go back. I think for us though, we will just enjoy beautiful music that can fill a room. We will enjoy being together.

I did get myself evened out on Sunday and got to watch some of the Nascar race on television. Now that is something I can take notes on.

Would it have been wrong for us to ask for a little "Orange Blossom Special" or "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" at the end of the symphony? Fun times.

Litenin' to that band play some songs at the Fish House...I mean the Bass Hall is fun! Singin' skits are fun too! What we need is a singin' skit about Nascar. Now we're talkin' culture.

maybe they were reporters? Hmmm. I was a music major and never saw anyone taking notes at a symphony unless they had to for class.
