Taking a weekend trip to Bristol with your dad...priceless

On Saturday Jim Ed and I left for Bristol, Tennessee. We flew into Charlotte, North Carolina. We got there in the late afternoon, rented a car and headed towards Bristol. We made it to Boone, North Carolina on Saturday night. We stopped in Blowing Rock for dinner and then went to find a motel. We ended up staying at Greene's Motel and had a few hours of sleep. This was the perfect place for just the guys to stay.

We headed to Bristol at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. The drive was a little over an hour and was through part of the Smoky Mountains. It was the most curvy road I have ever been on. We winded through and when we were 15 miles from Bristol a deer darted out of the woods and ran right into the side of our car. Two good-sized dents showed the force of the impact. We carried on and made it to the track at sunrise.

We spent the next few hours soaking up the environment at Bristol. Walking around the trailers and checking out all of the events was a blast. We finally made it into the Bristol Motor Speedway. We watched the pre-race activities and then the race began. It was awesome. Our seats were great as we could see the entire track. This Speedway is like no other I have ever seen. It is only a half-mile and it sits in a stadium where it feels like being at a football game, except there are 160,000 people there.

After the race we headed back to Charlotte. We got in around 1:00 a.m. and got a couple of hours of sleep. We flew out and I was back to work by 9:30 a.m. on Monday.

What a blessing to have the opportunity to go to Bristol. It is one of the places I have wanted to go and watch a race for a long time. I hope I can get Beth Ann there some time. It was an amazing place to see and experience a race. What made it incredible was going on a last minute decision with my dad. Just father and son hanging out and going on an adventure. I want to experience that with my boys in the future. Priceless now and priceless then.

I went to the night race several years ago and in the wee morning hours when we finally got back to the hotel... I grouched, "I want out of these mountains!"

I have never seen such curvy roads!
