Riley and his Mom

I love it when Riley will get to talking and say some funny or interesting things. Here is a portion of last night's conversation:

As Riley is getting in the car he picks up an empty Hawaiian Punch bottle.

Riley: "Dad, when I get older and my fingers get bigger, like yours, I am gonna drink this punch like you. I like it, and when I am big and old like you I will drink it to."

Me: "That will be fine. Are you ready to be big like Daddy?"

Riley: "Well when I am big I won't live at home with you and Mommy."

Me: "So are you going to live somewhere else because you will be married?"

Riley: "Oh Dad, I don't know. I will just be sad because I will really miss my Mommy."

Me: "She will miss you too. Will you miss living with Dad as well?"

Riley: "Yeah, yeah, yeah, but (with voice cracking) I really love my Mom and I will REALLY miss her".

Me: "I know buddy, but that is a long time away."

I am so thankful for the bond and connection that my boys have with their mother. She cares and loves for them so much. We are a lucky and blessed family because of Beth Ann.

Isn't it amazing how in those early years children really need that connection with mom? God made mothers so patient and calm just for this stage, I think. Its harder for dads to answer constant questions and not get a little irritated, but moms just keep answering the questions and providing the explanations over and over. Its really cool, though, when a child reaches the age of 5 or 6 and really want to connect with dad in a different way. Moms play a critical role for that point in development. The questions get answered, the wheels start turning, and a foundation is laid for critical thinking.
