Why Christian Education #2
I recently heard Lew Sterrett make the following statement:
"Just because you are in a garage does not make you a car".
Lew's words resonated in my head and made me think about Christian education. There is much debate and discussion regarding public schools, private schools and homeschooling. Take a look at BST's blogs a couple of weeks ago and at the comments that went on for days on this discussion. Educating kids is right, where is up to each family and each child's needs. There is one comment that I hear quite often regarding public over private and it is that public education is a mission field. I do agree with those that say that. I have been a teacher and administrator in public education. God's work needs to be done in that setting. After working in Christian education for over 5 years I can tell you that Christian education is a mission field too. Just because families put their children in a Christian school does not mean that they attend church, have a relationship with Jesus and believe in eternal life with Him. Where I work now is a mission field too. There are kids that need to know Jesus, families struggling through awful times and people that do not either believe or understand the grace of Jesus. A large part of my job is to help them with that in any way I can. I have the freedom to present that information to them or help point them to people that can truly bless them.
Just because the word CHRISTIAN is in the name of a school does not mean that everyone there has a relationship with Jesus. Christian education is a mission field.

I agree, how we educate our children may be different for different families--it can be a very emotional and hard decision. As Christians, I believe we should support each other's decisions and not judge them.
I can see such a pure heart in what you are desiring to do in private education--but I know you also made a big impact in public schools while you were there.
God leads us different places, so He can use us just where He knows He needs us!
Blessings!

Great point Fish! For crying out loud, you can't serve where you have not been sent, you can only serve where you have been sent. I go to work at a church building most days of the week. Does that mean I'm not involved in mission because it says church on the sign? Schools (public, private and home) churches, business buildings, movie theaters, bars, Starbuck's, etc. It's all a mission field! Bars and Starbuck's are my personal favorite, but that's just me. We are called to live missional lives! It's a lifestyle, an ongoing state of mind (and state of grace). Go where He sends and be missional!

We have been blessed to have our children in private school since kindergarten. We have also been blessed to watch as they reach out to their friends who don't know Jesus in their school. Like Southwest our school has many unchurched families and I love looking across our auditorium on Sundays and seeing so many who have been reached because they attend MCS.
It has been awesome to watch Bailey and Hutton be part of outreach and rejoice with them as friends gave their lives to God. He is so good!

A guy whose family who lives in a "preferred" school district was giving me a hard time about my kids being in a private school. According top him, as a minister I should have my kids in a public school.
So I asked him why he choose to live where he lives. He said their decision to buy wehre they did was all about the school district.
Hmmm...
