How times have changed

As we were driving to my parent's house yesterday after church, I saw something that I never saw growing up. There was a boy, probably about 8 years old, riding his bike down the street. He was holding on to one handle bar and the other hand was next to his ear. He was talking on a cell phone.

I was an avid bike rider growing up. Riding all over the neighborhood, to the store and to other people's houses made for a full day. I remember trying to ride a bike with a Big Gulp in one hand. I remember trying to ride a bike with a Slurpee in one hand. There were many times I would go from one place to another holding something. Seeing a kid on a bike with his cell phone made me laugh. Maybe I am getting old, but life is just different now for kids than it was when I was growing up.

What is different now compared to when you grew up? What have you seen that is completely different from your childhood?

The saddest change to me is simply the safety factor. I remember having the run of the neighborhood before I was even old enough to ride a bike. I would take off on my Big Wheel and be gone for hours and it was no cause for concern as long as I was home for dinner. I wonder how old Rainey will be before I feel safe letting her go to the park one block away by herself?

On another cell phone note, go to a college campus and walk around. It looks just like it did when we were in school except everyone has their hand up to their ear. Are things better this way? I think not.
